Grinding Tofu is a performative video work reflecting on the absence of queer sex education in my Chinese upbringing. The project originates from my first encounter with the slang “grinding tofu”—a euphemism for tribadism—which I misunderstood but deeply fantasized about due to repressed desire and lack of information.
In a surreal dream, I once saw an instructional video teaching how to sexually “grind” literal tofu in an empty classroom. Responding to this, I created a satirical demonstration video inspired by outdated Chinese educational tapes, featuring awkward transitions, dubbed moaning, and absurd lessons on lesbian sex practices. Through humor and mimicry, the work reclaims my silenced queer adolescence and questions the institutional erasure of same-gender desire, turning the classroom—a site of discipline—into one of erotic miseducation.
